Nebraska football running back Mehki Nelson talked about his touchdown catch and subsequent run that helped the team beat the Ohio Bobcats 49-21. He talked about the play after the game.
Nelson had an extremely productive day for the program. He had 10 carries for 64 yards and a touchdown while catching two passes for 65 yards and the touchdown in question. The 51-yard reception was his longest of the afternoon.
The play itself was a solid read from quarterback Anthony Colandrea. Nelson then evaded two Ohio defenders and showed off his speed to score. The touchdown put Nebraska ahead 35-21 after the extra point.
Nelson spoke to the media about the playfollowing the game.
“Got out, there was no protection. Just did my little route and I saw (Anthony
Colandrea’s) eyes so I knew the ball was coming to me. All I knew is that I had to make this catch. The rest was history after that. Just running, trying to get as many yards as I could, I broke free. I knew after I broke free I had to go score."
Saturday’s game was a great showing for Nelson. It was also a solid showing for the entire running back room. The explosiveness and playmaking ability from that room were evident almost immediately, and the program may have something special building there.
