Nebraska football fired offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen Saturday morning. Matt Rhule announced the move.
The firing comes following the Huskers’ 24-13 loss to Illinois on Friday night. He is coming off a trend where the program failed to score more than 17 points in any game since the Indiana contest on October 10.
Before the Indiana game, Nebraska’s offense scored 43.6 points per game and averaged 475.6 total yards per game. Following the matchup against the Hoosiers, the offense averaged just 13.5 points per game over the next four games.
Rhule released a statement regarding the move.
"Like so many of you, I am angry, I am disappointed and I am frustrated with our results this season," Rhule said in a statement. "As the head coach, I am ultimately
responsible for every aspect of our program—including wins and losses—and it is my responsibility to make changes when they are warranted. While there are many areas that need improvement, our offensive plan and execution is simply not working. Earlier today, I relieved offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen of his duties. As I have recently shared, Dana has a fantastic offensive mind, he is a strong leader, and he has done great work here at Nebraska. But simply, we need a change. Co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Glenn Thomas will take over play-calling duties."
Holgorsen joined Rhule’s staff as an offensive consultant in November 2024. He succeeded Marcus Satterfield as offensive coordinator at the time. Now, the Huskers will look to find an offensive identity over the next couple of weeks.
It will be interesting to see if this is the first domino to fall on this coaching staff. It’s clear the Huskers want to turn the page offensively. The program enters a crucial three-game stretch as it looks to finish the 2026 season on a high note.
