ESPN released its latest Football Power Index (FPI) rankings on Sunday after a wild Week 4 of college football. Nebraska continues to climb in the rankings, now sitting at No. 14 following a 31-13 win over Michigan State.
The FPI measures team strength and is meant to be the best predictor of a team's performance for the rest of the season. FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Projected results are based on 20,000 simulations of the rest of the season using FPI, results to date, and the remaining schedule.
The Huskers hold a FPI of 16.0 and jumped seven spots with their win over the Spartans and their first 4-0 start since 2016. Now, Nebraska has a chance to climb further in Week 5 when they face Maryland, coming off
a massive 54-3 loss to UCLA.
The road, however, quickly gets tougher, with Indiana and Oregon immediately following the Terrapins. Washington, Illinois, Ohio State, and Iowa are all also set to take on the Huskers, which only raises the challenges Nebraska has for the next two-thirds of the season.
Despite this, ESPN gives Nebraska a 99.3% chance of winning six games this season and a 25.2% chance to make the College Football Playoff.
