Nebraska football saw another player earn recognition for his performance this past week. Sophomore punter Archie Wilson was chosen as one of the Ray Guy Award's 'Ray's 8' for Week 6.
The Ray Guy Award, named for football's premier punter, honors the nation's best FBS collegiate punter. Winners of the Ray Guy Award are determined by net punting average, percentage of punts inside the 20-yard line and percentage of punts not returned.
Wilson put together one of his best performances of the season in the team's loss to Indiana. He averaged 57.3 yards per punt and delivered two of his longest punts. He punted the ball 60 yards in the second quarter before sending a career-best 68-yard punt in the fourth.
Wilson also finished just shy of Nebraska's
single-game record of average yards per punt. Dan Hadenfelt set the record against Colorado in 1999, finishing with a 57.6-yard average.
Wilson has helped the Huskers rank 20th nationally in net punting. He is averaging 44.6 yards per punt this season. Though he's only punted the ball 17 times through the first five games, he landed seven of those kicks inside the opponent’s 20-yard line.
