Nebraska football had a highly penalized game against the Maryland Terrapins on Saturday, recording 16 total penalties for 132 yards. Coach Matt Rhule discussed this in his Monday afternoon media meeting, and he wasn't too fond of it.
Saturday’s game was a highly penalized game for both programs. Maryland was penalized 12 times for 115 yards, as the officiating was tight, much like the game in the first half. Ultimately, Nebraska overcame both self-inflicted wounds and the officiating to improve to 5-0 on the season.
Even so, the coach wasn't too happy with that aspect of the game.
"I can't stand the pre-snap penalties... instead of just blaming the players, I always look at us as coaches like what are they thinking about? Like why are we thinking so
much? I try to do two things. We have to try to keep track of not just like, hey, we're getting penalties, but who's getting them? And so if it's like, hey, this corner is getting them. Okay, let's work on his technique. If he doesn't change it, we might have to play him less."
Mistakes will have to be minimal when the program takes on the Indiana Hoosiers this Saturday. Penalties have been a problem for the Hoosiers all season, and they have recorded 43 penalties for 367 yards.
The penalties have to change, and quickly. Husker fans hope the team can correct these mistakes as the schedule gets tougher.
