Former Nebraska football and current Kansas City Chiefs running back Emmett Johnson has impressed over the course of training camp and preseason. Chiefs coach Andy Reid identified one specific area that the rookie has improved on over the course of the last couple of weeks.
Johnson had a productive preseason. He recorded 26 carries for 123 rushing yards and one touchdown. He officially secured the number two running back spot on the team’s depth chart behind Kenneth Walker, and he is now in a position to take on a bigger role.
There was one specific thing that Johnson got better at over the course of the preseason, as Reid told the media.
“Pass protection. We knew he could run the ball, but the thing we had to see was the pass protection. For him
to be that number two back, you gotta be able to do that.”
Pass protection is an essential tool running backs need in modern college football. Johnson did it at a high level in Lincoln, and now it seems like he is translating those skills to the NFL.
