Nebraska offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen indicated running back Jamal Rule would be back for Saturday’s game against Indiana. Holgorsen spoke with the media on Tuesday afternoon.
The freshman has been out since the final play of the first quarter against the Michigan State Spartans in Week 4. He was held out of the Huskers game last Saturday against Maryland, but now looks to be ready to face a stout Hoosiers defense.
Rule has been a spark plug in Nebraska's running back room. He has 333 rushing yards and five touchdowns, averaging 7.5 yards per carry. Holgorsen said that Rule could have played last week against Maryland but without the practice reps, the coaching staff believed it was best to hold the freshman out.
"Jamal could have played
last week. I know coach (Rhule) mentioned that yesterday that it was just caution. He didn't practice last week. Mekhi (Nelson) at least practiced Monday and Tuesday and went down on Wednesday, so he got the practice reps. They both felt fine. We really, really, really believe in the importance of practice. For him not to have practiced last week, we didn't feel comfortable and we didn't have to do it."
This undoubtedly gives the Huskers a boost, as they look for their sixth win in a row and bowl eligibility. That said, the program is aiming for much bigger things, as they are off to their best start since the 2016 season.
The program will need all hands on deck to defeat the defending national champions. Getting Rule back is certainly a step in the right direction.
