It was a valiant effort with a lot of ups and downs for both teams, but theIndianapolis Colts ultimately fell short to the Kansas City Chiefs, losing 33-30 as time expired in overtime.
Quarterback Daniel Jones finished the game with 210 passing yards and a passing touchdown, while running back Jonathan Taylor was a bell cow for the Colts.
Taylor finished the game with 92 rushing yards, 40 receiving yards, and two touchdowns. However, on Indianapolis’ drive in overtime, the Chiefs were prepared for Taylor in the red zone, stuffing him on back-to-back plays. That said, this game never would have gone to overtime if it were not for Taylor and his production.
Here is a look at the good, bad, and ugly in the Colts’ overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs:
The Good
Jonathan Taylor: Taylor was the highlight of this game for Indianapolis. He served as the bell cow for the Colts throughout the entire game with 24 carries and four receptions. He also surpassed over 100 scrimmage yards for the second straight game. Taylor can always be counted on for reliable production throughout a game, and he is what makes this offense go.
Josh Downs: When Alec Pierce went down, Josh Downs stepped up as the leading receiver in this game. He did what the Colts needed of him. On his nine targets, he caught seven passes for 72 yards. With uncertainty around Pierce's status moving forward, Downs may have to take on a larger role for the time being.
The Bad
Another early turnover: Daniel Jones did not have a bad game, and honestly, the interception was not his fault either. Maybe he could have placed the ball better to give Keenan Allen a better shot at it. Maybe he could have made a different read. But regardless, for the second consecutive game, the Colts followed up a scoring drive with a turnover, giving the opponent all the momentum.
Sauce Gardner's dropped INT: This game could have been a lot different if Sauce Gardner had not dropped the interception from Patrick Mahomes. He jumped the route perfectly, and it hit him right in both hands. The drop proved costly as Kansas City would end up scoring a touchdown on that drive. When you have a chance at a momentum-changing turnover, you have to take it.
The Ugly
Pass Defense: The ugly in this game is pretty much just the defense. First, addressing the passing defense, Patrick Mahomes put up nearly 400 passing yards and three touchdowns. This is the second game in a row Indianapolis has allowed a quarterback to have at least 300 passing yards against them. This is also the second week they allowed a 100-yard receiver, giving up 150 yards to Zay Flowers in the opener and 101 yards to Travis Kelce in this game. Indianapolis is going to lose a lot of games if they keep giving up these kinds of numbers.
Run Defense: Derrick Henry had 144 rushing yards against them in the opener, with Baltimore topping 200 rushing yards as a team. Kansas City did not quite get to 200 rushing yards, but their leading running back Kenneth Walker III had 117 rushing yards, including 18 rushing yards and 22 passing yards on the final drive of the game. Indianapolis is not going to go far, giving up a 100-yard receiver and a 100-yard rusher in every game.
