An anticipated position of strength for the Indianapolis Colts now has some question marks as the preseason concludes.
The Colts' cornerback unit has the potential to be one of the best starting units in the NFL, and that still remains true. Sauce Gardner, Charvarius Ward, and Justin Walley form a very formidable trio.
That said, the margins around this position group appear to be growing thin.
Charvarius Ward was back on the practice field this week after missing time due to a back injury. However, he said that this is an injury he'll have to continue to "manage" moving forward.
Behind the Colts' starters, the depth of the cornerback group has been exposed this summer. The team just waived Mekhi Blackmon, while Johnathan Edwards has surrendered
several chunk plays. Rob Carter Jr. took some lumps in the latest preseason game as well.
The good news is that veteran Cam Taylor-Britt has provided a steady presence, and he is likely to be the first option off the bench both in the slot and outside.
Again, the Colts' starting unit can still certainly be quite good. But the overall outlook of this cornerback position group doesn't seem to be as strong as once thought earlier in the offseason.
