The Indianapolis Colts'rebuild isn't only about accumulating as much draft capital as possible; having the financial flexibility to reshape the roster will be crucial as well.
By trading away Quenton Nelson and DeForest Buckner, the Colts received a 2027 third-round pick and a fourth-round pick, along with a 2028 fifth-round pick. According to Tom Pelissero, parting ways with Nelson and Buckner at this point in the season also freed up over $17.7 million in salary cap space for the 2026 season.
With the Quenton Nelson and DeForest Buckner trades, the Colts have cleared over $17.7 million in cash and salary cap space while adding two picks in 2027 (3rd and 4th rounders) and one in 2028 (5th). A significant day in what will be a major rebuild under a new

Over the Cap now has the Colts with $37.26 million in available cap space -- the most of any team in the NFL. Any unused cap space from 2026 can be rolled over into 2027.
Looking ahead to 2027, Spotrac is estimating that Indianapolis has $97.84 million in available cap space, which ranks as the fifth-most, giving the GM plenty of cap room to operate with.
Having excess draft capital and cap space, if utilized effectively, can help accelerate the turnaround.
With all that cap space, rather than the Colts taking big swings on a few high-end players, the new GM may choose to sign a number of free agents in an effort to overhaul the roster on the fly.
