One position group in particular on the Indianapolis Colts' 53-man roster has a glaring issue following cutdown day.
While the Colts' starting offensive line unit should be quite good, they have very little depth at the tackle position.
In fact, excluding the starters, the Colts do not have a backup tackle on the 53-man roster at the moment. GM Chris Ballard, however, seems confident in how the Colts navigate a potential injury at that position.
"I think you'll see as we move forward with the roster over the next week and that'll work itself out," Ballard said. "We have some guys we really like, one Goncalves, unequivocally can do it. He's done it before, and two, we really like where Farmer's heading. Alright, he's heading in an upward trajectory
that we really like, and then we have a couple other guys that we think have done really well that are on the practice squad that we think can help us also."
While the initial roster is set, an additional move could be coming before Week 1 to bolster the tackle depth.
As of now, it sounds like the plan would be to move Matt Goncalves from right guard to one of the tackle spots if needed, with Jalen Farmer then taking over at right guard.
Also on the practice squad is Luke Tenuta, who was thought to be the front-runner this summer for the Colts' swing tackle role.
So, to Ballard's point, the Colts do have options, but the margins at the tackle position are quite thin right now.
