Daniel Jones has Shane Steichen’s backing to stay as the Indianapolis Colts’ starting quarterback.
But his struggles have prompted speculation about how long that will be the case.
In ESPN’s Week 7 buzz column, Jeremy Fowler suggested Indianapolis’ options range “from an eventual head coaching change to a quarterback demotion” if the team’s performance doesn’t improve.
It was Fowler’s take on the situation, not a report that Indianapolis is preparing to bench Jones behind the scenes.
Steichen has continued to express confidence in his quarterback while admitting the need for better play and fewer turnovers.
Jones recently discussed his future with the team following GM Chris Ballard's firing, mentioning the need to get back to playing good football
and that his focus is on the Minnesota Vikings.
Jones has thrown six interceptions this season while completing about 59% of his passes and averaging 5.9 yards per attempt. His turnovers have compounded the problems for an offense toiling to find consistency.
The pressure throughout the organization increased Monday when the Colts dismissed Ballard following a 26-20 loss to the previously winless Tennessee Titans.
Indianapolis is now 2-4, with a road matchup against Minnesota coming next.
