The Indianapolis Colts committed to Jonathan Taylor’s future in August.
Following Monday’s front-office shakeup, how they build around their star running back becomes an important question.
CBS Sports’ Carter Bahns proposed trading Taylor to Minnesota.
"With general manager Chris Ballard fired and coach Shane Steichen potentially on his way out the door, too, this franchise could be headed toward a tear-down," Bahns wrote. "Teams will call about Taylor. Minnesota needs to make sure it is in the conversation."
But there are obvious motives for Indianapolis to retain him.
Taylor signed a two-year, $44 million extension in August, with $39 million guaranteed and a maximum value of $47 million. The agreement keeps him under contract through the 2028
season.
His production explains that cash splash, as Taylor rushed for 1,585 yards and a league-leading 18 touchdowns in 2025 to earn his third Pro Bowl selection.
But will the next general manager view Taylor as someone to build around? Moving an esteemed offensive piece would open up another need for a franchise that already feels the heat.
Owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon’s public message Monday emphasized continued expectations to compete, improve, and win following Chris Ballard’s dismissal.
The practical move for the Colts is what approach best positions the next regime to succeed, with Taylor’s recent extension and first-rate ability acting as a clear-cut reason to keep him.
