The Indianapolis Coltsgot a reality check after a tough outing, especially for the defense, as Sauce Gardner found Sunday’s season-opening performance particularly difficult to accept.
Baltimore piled up 506 total yards in a 41-23 win at Lucas Oil Stadium, outgaining Indianapolis by 255 yards. Lamar Jackson threw for 324 yards, while Derrick Henry rushed for 144 yards and three touchdowns.
And Gardner didn't mince words afterward.
“As a defense, that’s unacceptable,” Gardner said, per WISH-TV’s postgame video. “That’s probably a bottom percentile of things that don’t usually happen.
“You know, all of us, we can make the plays that we need to. … We’ll be better.”

The Colts had entered Week 1 with better expectations for a secondary featuring Gardner and Charvarius Ward Sr.
Instead, Baltimore found explosive plays right off the gun.
Zay Flowers recorded a career-high 150 receiving yards in the first half alone, including a 54-yard touchdown, before leaving with a hamstring injury.
Indianapolis fell behind 31-13 by halftime and never recovered. Gardner’s comments now pose a challenge in front of a defense that was expected to be one of the Colts’ strengths in 2026.
