The Indianapolis Colts have released their initial 53-man roster, and included was Anthony Richardson -- as expected.
Despite Richardson's trade request back in late February, he has remained with the team. Releasing him was likely not in play.
In the early going, that was reportedly due to Richardson's trade market not developing.
However, over the last month, he has earned a roster spot with his play, potentially stepping into the backup quarterback role.
As training camp progressed, it seemed less and less likely that Richardson would be dealt before the season.
“I think you take care of your own team first," assistant GM Ed Dodds said earlier in camp, via The Athletic's James Boyd. “We want to have three (QBs) that can play. So, if he’s one of them,
he’s gonna be here.”
Richardson finished the preseason completing 21-of-33 passes for 250 yards with an interception. He's rushed for 69 yards as well, and that ability to extend plays has been a differentiator for him.
While consistency is still needed, Richardson did look more refined this summer.
