TheIndianapolis Colts announced on Friday that they released veteran wide receiver Darius Slayton.
The Colts initially signed Slayton on Sept. 22 after Alec Pierce was placed on injured reserve. Slayton did not appear in a game.
Why did the Colts release Darius Slayton?
The Colts signed Slayton to help provide a vertical presence in the passing game with Pierce sidelined. However, he did not play in Weeks 3 and 4, as he was still learning the offense.
"Darius is still just learning the offense," Steichen said after the Commanders game, via Colts.com, "getting into it, he's only been here for two weeks. We'll see how next week goes."
Then last week, Slayton was ruled out on Saturday with a knee injury after he popped up on the injury report on Friday.
Without Pierce, the Colts' offense has
struggled to push the ball downfield. Not only has that limited explosive pass play opportunities, but it's made moving the ball on short- to intermediate routes more challenging as well, with defenses shrinking the field.
For now, it's back to the drawing board at the receiver position for the Colts.
