The Indianapolis Colts’ late addition of Keenan Allen is earning high marks.
Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon gave Indianapolis an “A” for signing Allen in his Aug. 21 re-ranking of the NFL’s biggest free-agent additions by position. It was the highest grade among the five wide receiver deals evaluated, ahead of Romeo Doubs (B), Mike Evans (C-minus), Wan’Dale Robinson (D) and Jalen Nailor (D).
“Love these midsummer bolster deals for teams in need of some depth and experience at key positions,” Gagnon wrote when discussing Allen.
The reasoning centered on the Colts’ limited exposure in a one-year deal worth up to $8.3 million and Allen’s lengthy track record. The veteran has surpassed 700 receiving yards in nine consecutive seasons.
Allen, 34, returned
to the Los Angeles Chargers last season and caught 81 passes for 777 yards and four touchdowns. He has 1,055 career receptions for 12,051 yards and 70 scores across 171 regular-season games.
The six-time Pro Bowler also reunites with Colts head coach Shane Steichen, who spent seven seasons on the Chargers’ coaching staff from 2014-2020.
With Alec Pierce recovering from offseason ankle surgery, Allen hands Indianapolis high-caliber depth ahead of the regular season and is likely to fill that WR3 role.
