Which player will be the X-factor for the Indianapolis Colts during the 2026 NFL season?
ESPN's Ben Solak recently answered that question for all 32 teams. As Solak describes it, an X-factor is a player who can dramatically swing the season with their individual play. Quarterbacks, coaches, and rookies were not taken into consideration for this exercise.
So who was Solak's pick for the Colts?
Cornerback Justin Walley.
Solak mentions that with Sauce Gardner and Charvarius Ward at outside cornerback, a strong season from Walley at the nickel could be the final piece of the puzzle for a Colts secondary that can then play man coverage against just about any opponent.
"After training camp and preseason action, he looks like he can be a sticky cover man
who allows defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo to call more man coverage to feature the strength of his back seven -- the cornerbacks," wrote Solak.
Walley, a third-round pick in 2025, missed his rookie season due to an ACL injury. However, since his return during offseason programs, he has seemingly picked up where he left off last summer, putting together another impressive showing.
If Walley can prove to be another reliable man coverage defender for the Colts, that will provide the pass rush and linebacker positions with some added help -- something that both position groups may need this season.
"If the corners can't make impact plays in coverage, Indianapolis' defense will have too many holes to cover up, and it will be forced to rely heavily on an offense that needs time to get healthy as quarterback Daniel Jones and receivers Alec Pierce and Josh Downs return to health," Solak wrote.
The Colts are bullish on the competitive juice Walley brings to the defense and his instincts, which led to strong ball production in college.
