The Indianapolis Colts are making a change on defense heading into Week 2.
After safety Cam Bynum wore the green dot in the season opener, that responsibility will now belong to linebacker Akeem Davis-Gaither -- a decision that Bynum is fully on board with.
“I think it’s a great decision for Akeem to do it," Bynum said on Wednesday, via The Athletic's James Boyd. "Especially me being one of the leaders and being the safety, the main mode of communication on the back end. So I think it will help that I can focus on lining up and being able to faciliate on the back end, especially when Akeem is able to help out the D-line and tell the D-line certain things and talk to the DBs.
"So it's perfect that he's right in the middle of the defense, where he can
relay the stuff to the front, I can do the stuff on the back end, and then I think it creates better communication from front to back. So I think it's really a good thing and I'm fully in agreement. Glad that Akeem is also on the same page too."

The player who wears the green dot is responsible for relaying the play call from defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo to the rest of the defense. As Bynum also mentioned, there were times this past Sunday when that was a challenge, particularly on deep balls, where he then had to listen to the play call as he ran back to the huddle, relay that call to his teammates, and then get back into position on the back end of the secondary.
Bynum also noted that with Davis-Gaither wearing the green dot, he'll be better able to communicate pre-snap adjustments to the defensive front, something that was difficult for Bynum as the deep safety.
Bynum's focus can now solely lie on making sure that the defensive backs are positioned correctly, know what's coming, and makign any specific adjustments as needed in the secondary.
