ESPN'sSeth Walder recently ranked every backup quarterback from No. 1 through 32, and theIndianapolis Colts'Anthony Richardson is near the bottom.
Walder acknowledged that for many of these quarterbacks, there's not much information on them out there, so the margin for error with this exercise is "large," as he put it.
"But that shouldn't prevent us from doing these rankings -- after all, teams must make choices about their backups with similarly scarce information," Walder wrote.
That said, Richardson has a decent sample size to look at over his first three seasons, where he's dealt with injuries and inconsistency. Walder didn't offer any insight as to why Richardson was No. 27 specifically.
In 17 games, Richardson has completed just 51% of his
passes with 11 touchdowns to 13 interceptions, although the Colts do have an 8-7 record in games he has started. When evaluating Richardson's performance, his ability to extend plays shouldn't be overlooked.
Richardson would compete with Riley Leonard this summer for the backup role -- a competition he would go on to win. He was able to move the offense more consistently, generated some chunk plays, and overall, Richardson appeared to be more comfortable.
Although he requested a trade early in the offseason, GM Chris Ballard has made it known that Richardson will remain with the team this season.
