On Tuesday, theIndianapolis Colts made the big decision to trade away Pro Bowl left guard Quenton Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks.
Nelson, who is in the final year of his deal while continuing to play at a high level, quickly emerged as a prime trade candidate once it was clear that the Colts could become sellers.
So how exactly did this deal with Seattle come about?
In Jeremy Fowler's weekly "buzz" column, he provided some insight into the behind-the-scenes work that led to this trade.
"The Colts were transparent with Nelson during the process, reaching out Monday to stress that the team wanted to send him to a good situation," Fowler wrote.
In those conversations with Nelson, Seattle emerged as an "appealing option" for Nelson.
Fowler added that
Nelson didn't have control of where he went, but his input was taken into consideration.
"On Tuesday, interim GM Ed Dodds called Nelson into his office to deliver the news about the Seattle trade, about which Nelson was fired up," Fowler wrote.
In return for Nelson, the Colts received a 2027 third-round pick and a 2028 fifth-round pick.
Fowler reported that the Packers, Bears, and Eagles were other teams that showed varying levels of interest in Nelson.
