It’s not too often you see consecutive plays go for 75-yard touchdowns. It becomes even more of a rarity when it’s the same play style, ending with the same player finding the end zone but that’s exactly what happened for UCLA Bruin wide receiver Aidan Mizell on Saturday.
With UCLA and Minnesota tied in the fourth quarter, the Bruins dialed up deep shots to Mizell, and both times quarterback Ty Dieffenbach hit Mizell in stride for touchdowns. It was bold but it was perfectly played by UCLA and it led to a 34-20 win for the team.
Following the two-straight touchdowns, UCLA did not get greedy and try it for a third-straight time. Instead the team went into ball possession mode, and closed out the win with ease. UCLA’s head coach Bob Chesney spoke
about the play calling in the fourth quarter in the postgame press conference.

“I don’t want to get into it too much honestly but there were some things we were doing early that were setting up this next thing that we could do and that’s ultimately what we felt like we saw and we were able to attack it,” Chesney said. “Aidan’s fast obviously, we all know that. I thought he just took the top off that thing.”It wasn’t all Mizell either, with Chesney throwing some praise to his quarterback for hitting Mizell on back-to-back tries.
“Ty turning the ball up and over like he did, that’s important to do to give him a little bit of room for error, slow down, speed up, a little bit left, a little bit right opposed to just a 2-ball that’s got to be thrown perfectly,” Chesney said of Dieffenbach. “Really it’s all about the offensive line there. Riley (Robell) was out a couple plays in there. Hall (Schmidt) was out a couple plays in there.”
UCLA’s offense was tested but they landed the two big plays which ended up being enough to get the team their ninth-straight win to begin the 2026 season.
