Following the UCLA Bruins’ Week 1 over the California Golden Bears, the Bruins find themselves collecting some votes in the Week 1 Associated Press Top-25 rankings.
UCLA gathered seven votes in this week’s ranking, an early sign that voters believe in the future of the program under Bob Chesney. Chesney and the Bruins entered the fourth quarter tied with Cal before UCLA left their old conference rivals in the dust, scoring three touchdowns to pick up a 45-24 win.
While UCLA didn’t crack the Top-25, seven other Big Ten Conference teams did. Ohio State tops the list with the reigning champion Indiana Hoosiers coming in at No. 5 and the Oregon Ducks at No. 6.
Oregon dropped four spots after their battle with Boise State. The USC Trojans stayed put
at No. 14 after their shutout win. Penn State finds themselves at No. 16, Washington dropped down to No. 19 with the Iowa Hawkeyes at No. 21 to round out the Big Ten teams in the Top-25.
UCLA wasn’t the only Big Ten team to earn Top-25 votes, with Illinois, Michigan and Minnesota all picking up votes. Michigan held on for a thrilling victory over Western Michigan but it cost them in the AP rankings, dropping from No. 16 to unranked. Some voters still showed faith in the Wolverines though, as Michigan received 69 votes compared to just the seven for the Bruins.
We’ll see if UCLA can continue to pick up momentum this weekend when San Diego State comes to town for the Bruins’ home opener.
