The UCLA Bruins will be without one of their top wide receivers for the rest of the season, with head coach Bob Chesney announcing on Monday that Mikey Matthews will miss the rest of the 2026 season after undergoing foot surgery.
Matthews caught four balls for 88 yards in the season opener against Cal but that wound up being it for Matthews on the season. Matthews injured his foot in Week 2 against San Diego State, with the injury ultimately requiring season-ending surgery.
“Mikey had surgery on his foot the other day. So that’s going to be a wrap for him.” Chesney said.
That gives Nico Iamaleava one less target but it creates opportunities for the rest of the Bruin wide receivers. On Saturday versus Purdue, Leland Smith Brian Rowe Jr. and Semaj
Morgan both made the most of their chances. UCLA had their best game of the year throwing the ball versus Purdue, with Iamaleava throwing his first three touchdown passes of the year.
Matthews played his freshman season with Utah, putting up 261 yards as a freshman before spending one season with Cal before heading south to Westwood to join the Bruins. Matthews put up 348 yards last year, appearing in all 12 games for UCLA.
It was Matthews’ third-straight season appearing in at least 12 games, showing that he’s capable of staying on the field but unfortunately his 2026 campaign was cut short.
