It seems that Bob Chesney gets his signature win with the UCLA Bruins every single week. Chesney certainly did it again on Saturday, with his Bruins going on the road and knocking off the Oregon Ducks 17-15 to move to 5-0.
UCLA's defense shined all game long
UCLA’s defense played brilliant football. Colin Hitschler had his team ready to go. UCLA’s secondary was nails all game long after being a bit leaky to open the season. The Bruins forced seven turnovers and refused to let the Ducks sustain any long drives.
A nightmare showing from Dylan Raiola
Not only was the UCLA defense terrific, Oregon quarterback Dylan Raiola played a brutal game of football. Raiola went 6-19 with two interceptions for 43 yards and a lost fumble before being benched. One of the worst quarterback statlines you’ll come across all season.
Oregon's defense didn't let UCLA break the game open
The UCLA
offense generated many opportunities but a blocked field goal, turnovers and fourth down failures kept points off of the board for the Bruins. Even with the mistakes, it helped UCLA dominate the time of possession battle, with the Bruins controlling the ball for 39:15 compared to just 20:45 for Oregon.
Nico Iamaleava struggled hard at Autzen Stadium before leaving with an injury
It wasn’t a banner day for UCLA’s signal caller, Nico Iamaleava. Iamaleava lost a fumble and threw two interceptions all in the first half. Iamaleava did not return in the second half, with a leg injury keeping him out of the game. It wasn’t Madden Iamaleava who came in to replace his brother, instead it was Ty Dieffenbach.
UCLA quarterback Ty Dieffenbach?
Dieffenbach wasn’t bad either. The Cal Poly transfer went 3-6 through the air for 43 yards and a touchdown. Dieffenbach added a six yard rush, with the 6’6” quarterback showing some mobility too.
It was a standout performance for the UCLA defense but it’s looking like the Bruins are capable of being at a College Football Playoff level in year one under Chesney.
