No matter how many hours on Madden you can log, learning an NFL playbook on the fly is not an easy task. Former UCLA Bruin Demetric Felton Jr. knows that as well as anyone, as he switched teams and positions during his NFL career.
Now that his playing days are over, Felton is looking to simplify things for the players who will come after him. Felton has created an online platform that will help players study new playbooks, and quiz them to ensure that they’re picking up the specifics.
It’s fitting that Felton is attempting to find a solution for an issue that NFL teams have battled for decades, with Felton spending time at running back and wide receiver at the NCAA and NFL levels.
Ben Bolch of the California Post wrote about Felton’s creation.
“Throughout my playing career, I always felt like I played the best when I wasn’t thinking and I just reacted,” Felton told Bolch. “When you’re confident that you know your responsibility, it allows you to play that way and that’s our whole goal with building this.”
Felton retired this offseason, getting hired on by one of his former teams, the Cleveland Browns as a player development assistant. Helping players get up-to-speed with a new playbook is certainly one way to help speed up player development.
Felton spent four seasons in Westwood with the Bruins, spanning from 2017-2020, where he scored 16 total touchdowns. The Pac-12 wasn’t always ready for Felton’s explosiveness, scoring on a kickoff return, through the air and on the ground. For his UCLA career, Felton totaled over 2,000 yards from scrimmage.
