UCLA Bruins head coach Bob Chesney didn’t go to bed dreaming of scoring 54 points ahead of the Bruins Big Ten Conference clash with Maryland but he still got what he was looking for, which was for UCLA to play their best football.
It was a dominant showing in every way imaginable. Chesney moved to 4-0 on the season and in his UCLA tenure, a remarkable beginning to his time in Westwood. Maryland wasn’t ready for the Bruins’ greatness, getting smoked in the rain 54-3.
“I wasn’t thinking about those lines, I wasn’t really thinking along any lines. I don’t think we want to name a score and predict things. We want to play our best football and do it one play at a time and that’s what I think our guys have done a really good job of,” Chesney said postgame.
“I thought we finally played a complimentary game of football.”
That might be an understatement. After having to battle for each of their first three wins of the seasons, UCLA crushed Maryland on Saturday. The Bruins totaled 475 yards of offense while Maryland was held to 181.
Even though UCLA turned the ball over twice on a pair of lost fumbles, they still won the turnover battle by forcing five turnovers, including picking off QB Malik Washington four times. That was the road performance Chesney was hoping to see from his team going into the bye week.
“Overall, a good day at the office,” Chesney said. “We executed a good game plan. We knew what we wanted to do. It stayed the course of what we thought it would be and we were able to come out with a win.”
Chesney can rest assured that his team has looked terrific in his first four games with the Bruins, with a real test awaiting them in Week 6, when UCLA travels north to face Oregon.
