One of the many good things about UCLA Bruins first-year head coach Bob Chesney is the fact that he doesn’t punch down. When presented with an opportunity to make light of San Diego State head coach Sean Lewis’ comments, Chesney took the high road after collecting the victory.
Lewis noted that he was undaunted by UCLA’s talent, khakis or their polos ahead of the Week 2 matchup. To Lewis’ credit, San Diego State hung with the Bruins for three quarters before UCLA put things to bed in the fourth.
After the game, Chesney was quick to make light of the situation.
“I could care less about the khaki comment. I’m sure that I’ve said way worse when I was a coach playing a team that’s technically a level above you,” Chesney said. “It’s whatever you got
to do. I’m sure he didn’t mean it in any major offensive way. I’m sure it was a moment to get his team excited. It just happens when you’re in this type of market.”
Nothing like a quick reminder that the Big Ten is “technically a level above” San Diego State and the new Pac-12 Conference. Chesney took the quips in stride but still snuck in a jab while remaining respectful. Chesney then even added in a compliment for Lewis to boot.
“He’s a great football coach,” Chesney said. “I think he does an unbelievable job and I’m sure he didn’t mean a whole lot of it, coming from San Diego by the way, it’s not like they’re in the middle of whatever.”
San Diego State and UCLA may not be too far apart in a geographical sense, 18 points separated the two teams on Saturday as the Bruins moved to 2-0.
