The UCLA Bruins being placed at No. 8 in the College Football Playoff rankings may feel nice for a program who have never made a CFP before but the committee gave UCLA a major hint on Tuesday.
The message? Lose and you’re gone. UCLA might be able to still sneak in the CFP with one loss but Tuesday’s rankings show that the Bruins will not be a playoff team if they lose two games.
Texas and Alabama have already lost two games this season and they’re both ranked ahead of the Bruins, who remain perfect at 8-0. UCLA does not have the benefit of the doubt. The team hasn’t proven over the years to be a winner and the Bruin schedule has turned out to be weaker than expected.
USA TODAY writer Blake Toppmeyer wrote about the CFP’s hint towards UCLA.
“The
committee is not a believer in undefeated UCLA. The No. 8 Bruins might need to finish undefeated to qualify. Indiana got the benefit of the doubt in 2024 while finishing 11-1 without a signature win,” Toppmeyer said. “IU’s lone regular-season loss that year came against eventual national champion Ohio State. So, Indiana nabbed a bid. UCLA can’t rely on getting the same treatment if it finishes 11-1.”

UCLA’s defense has been tremendous but it hasn’t been tested against top tier offenses, which is clearly weighing on the minds of the committee. If UCLA were to make the CFP, it’d be with a backup quarterback and potentially just one win over a ranked opponent.
