Is Bob Chesney and the UCLA Bruins nearing an extension? Our No. 1 Chesney insider, Bill Simmons, stated on his podcast that a new deal for Chesney is on the way after the revitalization of the UCLA football program.
Chesney has gotten off to an A+ start to his tenure with UCLA, having the Bruins at No. 5 in the polls and is a perfect 8-0 on the season despite losing his starting quarterback to a torn ACL. It’s not common to see an extension less than one year after signing a deal but Chesney’s tenure with UCLA has been far from common.
It’s UCLA’s first 8-0 start since 2005 and the Bruins’ depth is the reason why. Chesney and new UCLA football general manager Darrick Yray brought in that depth and it paid dividends for UCLA this season. Now it’s
time to reward Chesney with a new deal that could make him one of the highest-paid coaches in the country.
“UCLA is going to extend Bob Chesney,” Simmons said on Sunday in a matter-of-fact tone. “That’s in the works. I know so. The Bob Chesney extension will happen. All of the UCLA fans are starting to panic because nobody went to the last game and the Rose Bowl is not packed enough, that some big university is going to scoop him or an NFL team, he’s not leaving.”

Simmons is certainly giving off of the vibe that he has inside knowledge of the potential extension, and it’s quite possible that he does. Simmons and Chesney have been intertwined since Chesney coached at Simmons’ alma mater, Holy Cross. Since then Simmons has been a huge supporter of Chesney and has been spotted with him since he took over the UCLA job.
A Chesney extension will allow Westwood to release a sigh of relief. Chesney has brought back UCLA football and it seems as if he’ll be sticking around for the Bruins.
