If you're a casual college football fan, fear not, because here's why you should, or shouldn't, support UCLA this upcoming season.
Antonio Morales, a national college football reporter for The Athletic, recently published an article titled, "Which college football team should you root for in 2026? A guide for the bandwagon fan."
Among several other teams, Morales provided reasoning for "Why you should get on board" with the Bruins this year.
"Because you’re trying to identify the next Curt Cignetti and think the guy who’s won at the sport’s lower levels, won at James Madison, then took over a floundering Big Ten program at a basketball school is the obvious choice," Morales wrote. "That’s new Bruins coach Bob Chesney, a breath of fresh air for
a dormant program. Chesney took JMU to the College Football Playoff last season and should provide UCLA with a clear coaching upgrade after the failed DeShaun Foster era. There aren’t many programs that have a head coach and starting quarterback (Nico Iamaleava) with Playoff experience like the Bruins will this year."
Morales also played devil's advocate and provided "Why you shouldn't" back UCLA.
"While there’s been a lot of optimism about Chesney, let’s be honest: He’s had a low bar to clear because Chip Kelly and Foster performed very poorly on the job," Morales stated. "Chesney has hit all of his layups this offseason, but the truly difficult part begins now. UCLA’s roster was pretty bad and underwent a major facelift this offseason. But has it been upgraded enough to win three more games and reach a bowl?"
