LeBron James had plenty of teams to choose from in the 2026 offseason as he was the most sought-after free agent on the market. After eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, James decided to go elsewhere, and that "elsewhere" ended up being the Philadelphia 76ers.
James chose the Sixers over teams such as the Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat--both of which he as a successful history with. James' first championships came as a member of the Heat when he led Miami to back-to-back titles in 2012 and 2013. He also led the Cavs to their only championship in 2016. However, he decided to join the Sixers rather than rekindle any feelings from the past in Cleveland and Miami.
Heat star Bam Adebayo, a teammate of James' with Team USA in 2024, gave his
thoughts to The Miami Herald on James deciding on Philadelphia:
“There ain’t no disappointment,” Adebayo said Tuesday of James choosing to sign with the 76ers over the Heat. “To me, you should always be happy for a person and their decision. He made a decision where he feels like it’s his best situation to win. And I feel like I’m a good friend of LeBron’s.”
"Like I told him in the message, I’m going to bust his a--,” Adebayo said with a smile. “So, it’s going to be an exciting season. I’m excited for the East. We got a whole new turnaround in the East. So, it’s going to be exciting this year."
It certainly will be exciting in the Eastern Conference with Adebayo and Giannis Antetokounmpo teaming up with the Heat as they are turning Miami into legitimate contenders again. The Sixers will, obviously, be up there as will the defending champion New York Knicks, the Detroit Pistons, Cavaliers, and others. James joining Philadelphia will make the Sixers serious threats in the East, but Adebayo and the Heat will certainly offer a challenge.
