CAMDEN, N.J. -- Three days into training camp, now is the time for players to get an idea of what the team can do. There are a lot of new faces on the Philadelphia 76ers and camp is the time for players to feel each other out, get an idea of how things are run, and how guys like to operate.
Jaylen Brown, in his first season in Philadelphia after 10 successful years with the Boston Celtics, has begun to learn what his new teammates can do. Of course, he has played against a guy like Tyrese Maxey a million times over the years in the regular season and playoffs, but seeing him in the gym as a teammate now is much different.
"I think Tyrese just has been a great communicator," said Brown at camp on Thursday. "Leading with his voice early on. He's
gone out of his way to make sure that I feel comfortable in the system, which goes a long way. He doesn't have to do that. I'm the type of guy that'll figure it out, regardless, but for him to be trying to make sure I feel welcome, I think I'm appreciative."
Maxey has continued to grow as the leader of this group. Despite being only 25 years old, Maxey is entering his seventh season with the Sixers. He has continued to take steps forward with his voice and is looking to make sure Brown is welcomed and comfortable with anything he may encounter with the team. After years of being opponents and going at it in one of the NBA's top rivalries, they are now on the same side trying to make things happen.
When the shocking trade happened to begin the offseason, Maxey reached out to Brown through texts to get him acclimated as quickly as possible, and now in the middle of training camp, Maxey is looking to get the 2024 finals MVP up to speed and make sure he feels comfortable.
"Tyrese has been a great host," Brown added. "Obviously, he's been here for a long time. He's been the one kind of making sure everyone is OK. He's been the one making sure everyone's kind of accommodated. He's overemphasized trying to make me feel comfortable, even if I didn't need it. He's been a great host."
