CLEVELAND -- LeBron James has made his return to Cleveland plenty of times across his 24 seasons in the league. The Cavaliers selected the Akron, OH native with the No. 1 pick of the 2003 draft and he completely transformed that franchise into contenders due to his brilliance on the basketball court.
James has seen it all in The Land. Failures. Triumphant moments. An ugly exit and an even uglier first return game back in 2010 as a member of the Miami Heat. A hero's welcome home in 2014. A championship 52 years in the making for the city of Cleveland in 2016. Leaving again in 2019. He experienced his first game back as a member of the Philadelphia 76ers in Friday's loss.
Friday's reception from the Rocket Arena crowd was a mixture of cheers and
some boos. Maybe some hurt feelings over choosing the Sixers over the Cavaliers in the offseason. However, no reception will ever bother him like one specific night 16 years ago.
"I don't know, because at the end of the day, nothing can get worse as December 2nd, 2010 from a reception standpoint," James stated, referring to the vitriol he received that night with the Heat. "So I've seen the depths of hell when it comes to reception here, all the way to the heavens above. So anything in between is easy money."

With that being said, James is going to have his No. 23 eventually go into the rafters at Rocket Arena. There is no question about that. He is the face of the Cavaliers, and arguably Cleveland sports as a whole. That is something that has to be on the mind of the Ohio native.
"Just the journey," James acknowledged. "The journey from being an 18-year-old rookie to leading a franchise to a championship and everything in between."
That championship was a special one for James. He had, obviously, won two titles with the Heat in 2012 and 2013, but the fact that the Cavs went toe-to-toe with the 73-9 Golden State Warriors and rallied from being down 3-1 to win before James bellowed out, "Cleveland! This is for you!" which has been seen a million times by every sports fan in the state of Ohio is one that remains as one of his top accomplishments in this league.
"As far as my tenure here and the years that I've spent here, obviously it goes at the top, along with being drafted," James stated. "Everything comes in between. So, being drafted, winning a championship, and then just building that whole momentum from the first seven years to coming back for four years and then everything between: losing in the playoffs, winning the playoffs, different teammates, different everything. So, being drafted and winning a championship is obviously the icing on the cake and something I wanted to do."
For now, James is looking to help the Sixers end a championship drought of their own and get the job done in the City of Brotherly Love, but the city of Cleveland and the entire Northeast Ohio area is special for No. 23. The Cavaliers will always have a special place in his heart, as it should.
