NEW YORK -- The Philadelphia 76ers saw the debuts of LeBron James and Jaylen Brown in their 106-100 win over the defending champion New York Knicksto open the season. The two championship stars were able to make big impacts on both ends in order to get the job done and allow the Sixers to get off to a good start.
James and Brown also got to play in their first regular season game with Tyrese Maxey. Of course, the two stars have worked out with their new teammate and played in preseason action with him, but in a real game? This was something new to both of them.
"His stamina," James marveled. "I feel like he doesn't get tired. One of the fastest guys in the league, if not the fastest with and without the ball. So, that's just going to be key for
our team to be able to continuously put pressure on the defense, and obviously he consistently can do that."
Maxey finished with a gaudy stat line of 28 points, five assists, four rebounds, three steals, and three blocks in order to help get the Sixers get off to a good start on the road. He set the tone on both ends of the floor and his teammates followed. His offensive creation with the ball in his hands whether it was for himself or his teammates is what really stood out to Brown.
"The speed," Brown stated. "The speed, his ability to just take off and just create the defense in the tough spot. The pressure he puts on, I want him to continue to do that for the whole game if he can, if we can find spaces for him to get out and run. He's going to create offense for a lot more for everybody when he does that. So continue to use his skill to get downhill and that's going to be great for us."
Obviously, James has played with a ton of players in this league--that's what happens across 24 seasons in the league--and when asked if anybody sticks out in his mind when it comes to finding a comparison for Maxey, he had to think a little bit.
"I mean, the first guy that comes to my mind, like with that, with speed, offensively, defensively, Dennis Schroder," James said after pondering. "Dennis Schroder is damn fast to hit the ball, and defensively is damn good too. Yeah, yeah, off the top of my head."
The Sixers will continue to build the chemistry and cohesion between Maxey, James, and Brown as they move forward with this championship contending season.
