PHILADELPHIA -- After 10 seasons with the Boston Celtics, it would make sense to watch Jaylen Brown with the Philadelphia 76ers and see some clunkiness at times. It's a big adjustment for everybody to see Brown in a jersey other than a green Boston No. 7 jersey.
After scoring 25 points in Monday's win over the Chicago Bulls, Brown is now averaging 20.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 4.3 assists while shooting 45.7% from the floor and 41.9% from deep. Those numbers are very good as it shows off his supreme talent in this league, but there have been some clunky moments on the offensive end in the early part of the season.
"I mean, he's fitting in along with all of us," LeBron James said of Brown. "We're getting better and better. It's not going to happen
overnight, but when he's been, 10 years? 10 years in a system in Boston and the city. So, it's going to take some adjustment. It takes adjustments for him. It's going to take adjustments for the rest of the guys that join these franchises as well."
Brown has had to make a huge adjustment in Philadelphia after being the leader for the Celtics in 2025-26. He had a career year in Boston as he led the Cs to the No. 2 seed in the East, but has now had to adjust and fit in playing next to James, Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid, VJ Edgecombe, and others. It can be overwhelming, but Brown has found a way to figure it out.
"It’s been good," added Embiid of Brown. "Obviously, after spending so much time in one city, especially competing against this team the last, basically his whole career, it would be kind of different. I don’t know how to say it, but it would take time to adjust a little bit. But I think he’s come in, trying to do his job, trying to lead guys. So yeah, he’s been great and we love having him."
A lot of what Brown brings doesn't show up in a box score. So, on the nights when he isn't exactly lighting it up in terms of scoring or finding ways to fill a highlight reel, the Sixers are feeling his presence on the floor. His fit with this group is obvious and they benefit greatly from having him on the floor.
"First of all, it's been amazing," coach Nick Nurse added of Brown. "He's a really good player, right? Like, his toughness. He just wins. He defends. He’ll rebound. Obviously, he can score from a bunch of different levels, and I'll take all that any day, man. It’s been phenomenal to coach him. What does he bring? He brings an intangible of confidence to your team. Even maybe he's not pouring in points or doing anything that you're—but there's a level of fight and competitive drive and winning spirit."
The performance against the Bulls was a big one as he and the Sixers continue to move in the right direction. Philadelphia will begin an important 3-game road trip on Wednesday against the Detroit Pistons.
"Tonight was a great step, and he showed what he's capable of, obviously," James finished. "His pressure, his shot-making ability, his rebounding ability. Just a professional."
