It’s summer in the NBA, so it’s time to learn history. The Philadelphia 76ers are one of the older franchises in the NBA. Their history dates to the 1949-50 season.
Given that longevity, the team has had hundreds of players come through the City of Brotherly Love. Sixers Wire looks at the uniform No. 8, which has been worn by 27 of those players.
With that being said, here is a look at all 27 players who wore the No. 8 uniform in Sixers history:
Paul Seymour
Seymour wore three numbers while playing for the Syracuse Nationals. He wore No. 8 during parts of the 1949-50 season and the 1950-51 season.
Wally Osterkorn
Osterkorn wore No. 8 for the majority of his time with the Nationals. He averaged 7 points and 6 rebounds across four seasons while with the franchise in the 50s.
Ed Conlin
Conlin began his career with the Nationals by wearing the No. 8 uniform. He switched to No. 11 in the 1957-58 season. He averaged 12.1 points and 5.9 rebounds with Syracuse.
Earl Lloyd
Lloyd mostly wore No. 11 while with the Nationals, but he switched to No. 8 in his final season with the team. He averaged 8.3 points and 6.6 rebounds and was a part of the 1955 championship team.
Connie Dierking
Dierking wore No. 8 while playing for the Nationals in the 50's. He returned to the Sixers at a later date and wore No. 26 then.
Dolph Schayes
The franchise icon wore No. 4 for a majority of his time with the Sixers as that number hangs from the rafters at Xfinity Mobile Arena, but he wore No. 8 in the 1963-64 season, his final one before retiring after 15 years in the league.
Marc Iavaroni
Iavaroni was a starter for the 1983 title team for the Sixers, and he averaged 4.9 points and 3.9 rebounds during his time in Philadelphia.
Michael Young
Young played only two games for the Sixers while donning the No. 8 jersey. He missed the only shot he took.
Pete Myers
Myers, mostly known for his time with the Chicago Bulls, played four games for the Sixers while donning No. 8 and he averaged 3.5 points and 2.5 rebounds.
Corey Gaines
Gaines only played 20 games for the Sixers and averaged 3.3 points and 3 assists while donning No. 8.
Mario Elie
Elie, mostly known for his time with the Houston Rockets, played three games for the Sixers. He averaged 2 points and 0.3 rebounds while donning the No. 8 uniform.
Alphonso Ford
Ford played five games for the Sixers and averaged 3.8 points and 4.0 rebounds while donning the No. 8 jersey.
Trevor Ruffin
Ruffin played 61 games with 23 starts in the 1995-96 season and averaged 12.8 points and 4.4 assists in his only season with the Sixers.
Aaron McKie
McKie won the Sixth Man of the Year award for the Sixers in 2001 and averaged 7.7 points and 3 assists during his time in Philadelphia overall.
Joe Smith
Smith wore No. 9 for the Sixers in the 1997-98 season, but he was brought back to Philadelphia in the Allen Iverson trade in 2007 with the Denver Nuggets. He wore No. 8 then and averaged 9.2 points and 6.7 rebounds.
Donyell Marshall
Marshall played the final season of a 15-year career with the Sixers in 2008-09 and averaged 3.8 points and 1.6 rebounds while donning No. 8.
Francisco Elson
Elson wore No. 8 for one game in the 2009-10 season. He had two points and a rebound in that game.
Nikola Vucevic
Vucevic was drafted by Philadelphia in 2011 and he played one season for the Sixers. He averaged 5.5 points and 4.8 rebounds before being sent to the Orlando Magic in the big Andrew Bynum deal.
Damien Wilkins
Wilkins played one season for the Sixers and averaged 6.4 points and 1.7 rebounds. He played 67 games and started 27 of them.
Tony Wroten
Wroten initially wore No. 8 with the Sixers before switching to No. 1. Across three seasons, he averaged 13.8 points, 3 rebounds and 2.6 assists,
Jahlil Okafor
Okafor was the No. 3 pick in the 2015 NBA draft and averaged 17.5 points and 7.0 rebounds as a rookie. He was pushed out of the rotation once Joel Embiid recovered from injuries and established himself as a foundation piece.
James Young
Young played six games for the Sixers and averaged 2.8 points and 0.3 assists toward the end of the 2017-18 season.
Zhaire Smith
Smith wore two numbers for Philadelphia. The 16th pick in the 2018 NBA draft played 13 games for the Sixers across two seasons due to injuries and an allergic reaction during his rookie season.
Tyler Johnson
With the Sixers dealing with COVID-19 in the 2021-22 season, they picked up Johnson on a 10-day deal to field a team in certain games. He played three games and averaged 3.7 points and 2.0 rebounds.
Paul Millsap
Millsap, acquired in the Ben Simmons-James Harden deal in 2022, played nine games and averaged 3.7 points and 2.8 rebounds after the trade. The four-time All-Star has since retired.
De'Anthony Melton
Melton, acquired in a draft night trade in 2022, averaged 10.1 points and 4.1 rebounds while shooting 39% from deep in his first season with the Sixers in the 2022-23 season. Injuries then marred his 2023-24 season and he then signed with the Golden State Warriors in that 2024 offseason.
Paul George
The George era was a bit underwhelming after the hype of the 2024 offseason, but he had some good moments. The 9-time All-Star averaged 16.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.0 assists while providing stellar defense and key mentorship moments for the team's youngsters. Overall, though, the two George seasons won't be remembered fondly by most of the fan base.
