CAMDEN, N.J. -- The Philadelphia 76ers brought in Jaylen Brown in an effort to help the team get over the hump and reach the mountaintop for the first time in quite a while. Brown has a championship ring from his days with the Boston Celtics when he won finals MVP in 2024. He knows what it takes to win in this league.
The Sixers bringing in a guy like Brown can be a bit distorted. He is somebody who is a legitimate star in this league and he needs as many as shots as the team's other stars for the offense to hum the way they believe it can. It will take a bit for the chemistry and cohesion to really figure itself out as time moves forward.
Good thing for Brown and the Sixers that VJ Edgecombe is already working on building that relationship.
"JB
is one of my favorite people in the world," Edgecombe beamed at practice on Tuesday. "He’s a great person, man. Someone that I still talk to damn near every day. He's always a leader. He's just--he's Jaylen Brown. He's a great person, and I--that's someone that I just have a really good relationship with, even though we just met like two months ago."
Of course, Brown and Edgecombe just competed in a grueling, physical 7-game series in which Philadelphia rallied from 3-1 to eliminate the Celtics in Round 1. Their relationship then was strictly out of respect. They would give each other their deserved flowers and move on.
Now, the two are teammates and are pushing the Sixers forward together.
"Maybe we competed, he always (said) like a ‘Good game young fella,’ you know what I'm saying?" Edgecombe added. "But other than that, it's been great. Just enjoying it. Obviously someone that I look up to in a way where it comes to like, how you take care of yourself, how you prepare for games, how you break down film, just anything like that."
The Sixers have one preseason game left on Friday before the real games begin on Oct. 20 when they open with the defending champion New York Knicks on the road.
