There's just something about those Boise State Broncos, isn't there?
The Oregon Ducks came into this Week 1 matchup against their foes from a state over, holding a 1-3 all-time record against the Smurf Turfers, and that one win came two years ago by just a measly three points. There were expectations that the 2026 season opener would be different, though, since Oregon boasted national championship aspirations and was favored by more than three touchdowns before kickoff.
Those expectations weren't met.
It's just gotta be something about Boise State.
The Broncos gave Oregon hell all game, going up 17-7 before halftime and eventually tying the Ducks at 27-27 midway through the fourth quarter once Dan Lanning's team regained its footing. Ultimately,
Oregon walked away with a 34-27 victory, keeping their championship dreams alive while also knowing full well this team is nowhere near where it needs to be to reach that ultimate goal.
We learned a lot throughout the first 60 minutes of football in Eugene, and we're sure to learn more going forward. For now, here are our biggest takeaways from Saturday in Eugene.
A Tightrope Walk Towards a Championship
Oregon quarterback Dante Moore said something after the game that took me a bit by surprise.
"I'm glad this game was how it was; we've got a lot to learn," Moore said after a career day with 378 yards passing. "Thank God it wasn't a 40- or 50-point blowout, because this just shows us who we are right now, and what we have to attack coming into next week."
If that's what Lanning instilled in his guys after a tense, nerve-wracking, and often frustrating season-opener, then I think the Ducks won in more ways than one. Did Oregon look good on Saturday? No, not by their standards. Did they play well? At times, but it was far too inconsistent. Is there a lot to clean up? Yes, undoubtedly.
Is everything they're aiming for still out in front of them?
Coaching a championship contender is hard. You want them to be so dominant that they blow every opponent out of the water, but you also want to keep them motivated and hungry enough to keep working hard. It's like a magic trick, or threading a needle. Lanning has walked that tightrope several times over the years, and he got a bit of an assist on Saturday in Week 1.
The Ducks played far below their standards against what we believe is a pretty good Boise State team. They still showed how good they can be, keeping the ceiling high, but left us thinking about how hard they need to work to reach their goals. In the coming weeks, Oregon will undoubtedly tip towards the side of blowouts and bloodbaths. They may eventually fall toward humility down the road, too.
But for now, they're somewhere in the middle, which feels like a good spot to be.
A Confounding Offensive Day
If you didn't watch the game, but just looked at the numbers, you'd assume that Oregon was in prime form on Saturday, and everything was clicking.
378 passing yards. 119 rushing yards. No interceptions. 209 yards after the catch. Four receivers over 50 yards; one with 150, and two with a touchdown.
Quite a debut for offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer, huh?
Eh, it didn't quite feel that way throughout.
The Ducks were stuck in the mud for a large part of the first half. Their first drive of the game went six plays for 17 yards and ended in a turnover on downs — a 4th-and-1 screen pass that was stopped short of the marker. Their second drive went four plays for 54 yards and ended in a punt. After scoring a touchdown on their third drive, they saw another possession end in a turnover on downs — another 4th-and-1 screen pass stopped short — and another punt.
I try not to bring social media reactions into my work, and tend to stay away from Oregon Twitter in tough times during games, but at this point, "spectacle" doesn't quite do what was happening on wifi networks in Eugene justice.
The Ducks looked disjointed, discombobulated, out of sync — whatever descriptor you want to use. There wasn't any rhythm, and a positive play was often negated by two negatives. Despite that, Lanning seemed to bristle at the fact that they weren't flowing early on, taking away blame from Mehringer in his first game as play-caller.
"I thought Drew called a really good game," Lanning said. "I don't think there was any disjointedness when it comes to that. I think there's execution. There are a couple of plays we could talk about: 'Okay, that was good process, bad result.'"
That's totally fair. I'm not in the meeting room, and I have no hand to play in the process of drawing up a game plan. Those plays may work 98% of the time in practice, and every call made tonight could have been completely sound. I believe that. I also believe my eyes, and in the first half, Oregon's offense looked very un-Oregon.
Dante lacked conviction on a lot of throws, and it appeared that many players were stuck in first gear. A late touchdown drive in the second quarter appeared to kick things up into second, but this unit has the firepower to get into rhythm quicker than that.
"We didn't start fast tonight, so that didn't show up for us," Lanning said. "We kind of had our backs against the wall there early, and I thought the guys responded to that. We wanted to see how we handle adversity, but as far as communication, I thought that was really clean throughout the day on offense, and really on defense as well. The performance and the execution have to be better."
In the end, Oregon's numbers are beyond respectable. They put up 497 total yards, scored 34 points, and got a win, allowing them to cruise on to Week 2 with some confidence. Going forward, I just want to see them get up to cruising speed a bit quicker.
Self-Inflicted Wounds
This game was close, and the Ducks have nobody to blame but themselves. That's an obvious statement, but it felt as if in this game more than any we've seen in a long time, Oregon couldn't get out of its own way.
Let's start with the penalties. Oregon had 10 of them for 90 yards, including two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, two DPIs, and three offside calls. In a game that's decided by a single score, it's hard not to look at those numbers and bristle.
Then there's the special teams, namely, punt returner Evan Stewart. He wasn't good enough tonight, plain and simple. I believe he is good enough to be back there, and I think he should be the guy going forward, but on Saturday, he nearly cost Oregon the game.
In the first half alone, Stewart called for a fair catch on Oregon's own 3-yard line instead of letting the ball bounce into the end zone. The Ducks would later punt on that possession. He also muffed a pair of kicks, one of which was lost, allowing the Broncos to score on the very next play.
It's the first game of the season, and mistakes are going to happen. I am fully aware of that, and know that these types of miscues are happening around the nation. After Week 1, though, if you're looking for an area that the Ducks need to clean up, this might be at the top of my list.
The Defensive Standard
This is another area where the stats don't quite agree with the eye test. If you were to watch that game and avoid the postgame box score, you'd likely walk away thinking that Oregon's defensive line — touted as the best in the country — had a pretty tough day. In the second half, Boise State routinely got push in the trenches and picked up 4-5 yards on the ground with ease, moving the chains and keeping the game close.
If you look at the numbers, though, it doesn't look half bad.
The Broncos rushed for 93 total yards and 2.6 yards per carry. Oregon's defensive line got home several times, sacking QB Maddux Madsen three times, with a total of eight quarterback hits.
Again, the numbers don't match up, but Oregon knows it needs to be better.
"Not good enough," Lanning said after the game about the defensive line's performance. "Not our standard."
The starting combo of Matayo Uiagalelei, Teitum Tuioti, Bear Alexander, and A'Mauri Washington combined for 23 tackles and five QB hits on the day. Throw in Matthew Johnson, Aydin Breland, and Elijah Rushing, and you get another four tackles.
On paper, this unit was pretty solid, and far from the reason they were in a tight game. Going forward, they want to, and need to, be better, though.
Those Dang Wide Receivers
Those wide receivers, man...
If you spent the offseason hyping up this group of pass-catchers, and calling them the best trio in the nation as I did, you're probably feeling pretty good on Saturday night. They looked like it.
It wasn't just one guy who led the way, either. All three players — Jeremiah McClellan, Evan Stewart, and Dakorien Moore — all had huge moments in the game that swung it in Oregon's direction. McClellan led the way with six catches for 150 yards and a touchdown; Stewart had eight catches for 72 yards with a long of 39; Moore had six catches for 93 yards and the game-winning touchdown — a play that Dante Moore says is the best one he's seen No. 1 make.

Oh, would you like to throw tight end Jamari Johnson in here as well? Why not? He also had four catches for 57 yards and a touchdown.
While the Ducks can routinely rely on their running game to get hard yards when they need to, it's becoming increasingly clear that this passing game is going to be a nightmare for any opposing defense to stop.
