Fox Sports analyst Joel Klatt had the Oregon Ducks as his preseason No. 1 team in the nation.
After the Ducks' close 34-27 win over Boise State, they are no longer No. 1.
Klatt, despite giving the Ducks a ton of praise for overcoming adversity and a 17-7 deficit, has decided to drop Oregon all the way down to No. 7 in his weekly rankings.
"It was a lot closer than we all thought. I picked Oregon to cover," Klatt said. "And they were in a dogfight with Boise again. I anticipated Oregon playing better than that. I think I underestimated how good Boise is. What I was impressed with from Oregon was that they were sluggish at times, sloppy at times; it was that they had a quarterback who grabbed the game and brought it down to a point where he could
dominate the game and what I was impressed with was their answer."
The Ducks were in a heap of trouble as they were down 10 as the second quarter was winding down. But they were going to have the ball last in that quarter, and they were going to have the ball first in the third quarter. That was their chance to get themselves back in the game, and they took advantage of that.
Dante Moore found Jamari Johnson for a 27-yard touchdown to make it 17-14 Broncos before the half, and kicker Gage Hurych nailed a 26-yard field goal after the first drive of the third quarter. With the score tied, both teams were essentially back to zero, and it was a case of whichever defense came through first.
Fortunately for the Ducks, it was their defense that would eventually come through for the big win.
As for Klatt's rankings, it's hard to think Oregon will move up significantly in the coming weeks until it goes to USC in three weeks. The Ducks go to Oklahoma State and host Portland State before playing the Trojans. Klatt has USC as the No. 10 team in the country.
Klatt has Ohio State, Texas, and LSU as his Top 3 after the first week of games.
