The Oregon Ducks couldn't keep up the pace in the hunt for an elite quarterback in the 2028 recruiting cycle. Now, they might have to prepare to face him in the future.
Five-star quarterback Christopher Vargas announced his commitment to Ohio State on Saturday, choosing the Buckeyes over Oregon and Virginia Tech. That didn't come as much of a surprise, as Vargas has been heavily linked to the Buckeyes throughout his process, while Oregon has put in considerable work on other passers and remains in position to land one later on.
Vargas, the No. 1 quarterback in the 2028 class, has impressive size and athletic ability to play the position. Standing at 6-foot-4, Vargas has a live arm and the ability to make throws to all parts of the field. As a sophomore,
he threw for 2,038 yards and 24 touchdowns with three interceptions, leading St. John's Preparatory Academy to a state title appearance in Massachusetts.

Ohio State is quickly building an incredible class in the 2028 cycle. In addition to Vargas, the Buckeyes have also landed commitments from five-star wideout Jett Harrison and blue-chippers Jameer Whyce (No. 4 DL) and Elijah Newman-Hall (No. 4 RB).
The Ducks are continuing to recruit four-star quarterback Josiah Boyd, and that seems to be where Oregon's interest has been all along. Oregon is fighting Kentucky for his services, but appears to be a frontrunner at the moment. The Ducks haven't landed a commitment in the 2028 class yet, but they are closely linked to several top recruits.
