The 2028 recruiting cycle is in full gear, with some of the top recruits in the nation scheduling visits to the nation's top programs. One of those recruits is Gaige Weddle, son of former Super Bowl champion and two-time All-Pro safety Eric Weddle, and every program wants a piece of him.
The Oregon Ducks are no different. Although the Ducks haven't been frontrunners for the four-star safety yet, they did land an important visit. Weddle will come to Eugene for Oregon's matchup against Michigan on Nov. 14. Weddle is the top safety in the 2028 class, according to Rivals, and the No. 12 overall player in the class.
Weddle hasn't spoken about the Ducks often early in his recruiting process, but by committing to a visit in Eugene, there is some mutual
interest. The San Diego area safety has locked in seven visits this fall, starting this weekend at Utah, where his father will be inducted into the Ring of Honor.
Eric Weddle was a two-time Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year at Utah and became a second-round pick in the 2007 NFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers. He spent most of his career in San Diego before making stops with the Baltimore Ravens and Los Angeles Rams. Weddle went to six Pro Bowls and was named to the NFL's 2010s All-Decade team.

Gaige Weddle is hoping to follow in his father's footsteps in the secondary, but Utah isn't the only option. Ohio State and Georgia are considered the leaders, but a late visit to Oregon against a Big Ten legacy program could push the Ducks up his list at the end of the season. He will also visit Cal (Sept. 25), BYU (Oct. 11), Miami (Oct. 24), UCLA (Oct. 31), and Ohio State (Nov. 28).
Weddle is a tremendous athlete, doubling as a quarterback at Rancho Bernardo High School. He threw for 2,224 yards and 19 touchdowns last season, while also rushing for 679 yards and 10 touchdowns. Weddle also made 101 tackles and five tackles for loss as a safety, tallying a pair of sacks and two interceptions as well.
Oregon has plenty of ground to make up, but Weddle's receptiveness to a visit is a good sign. The Ducks will need to battle both Big Ten powers and various West Coast programs to pull the son of an NFL star to Eugene.
