Another gutless showing from the Oregon Ducks on offense sunk the team to a new low, falling 21-10 on the road against Illinois.
The Ducks set the tone well out of the gate with a good mix of run and pass, leading to a Jordon Davison touchdown on the opening drive. From there, several of Drew Mehringer's play calls
were questionable, and Dylan Raiola couldn't complete a throw beyond the sticks when the Ducks needed it most.Illinois ran the ball to great effect in the second half as the Oregon defense struggled to get off the field. The Illini rushed for 225 yards and 5.8 yards per carry, while Michael Clayton II tossed two touchdowns in his first career start. Illinois' lowly defense should have been something the Ducks could take advantage of,
but the offense had very little consistency and was shut out in the second half.
Oregon ran the ball well with Davison and Dierre Hill Jr., but the play-calling often went away from the ground game for long stretches, and the Ducks once again had no vertical passing threat with Raiola missing several top receivers.
Take a look at some Oregon fans' reactions on social media as the Ducks fell to 4-3 on the season and saw any hope of making the playoff fall off a cliff.
Short-Handed Out Wide
It seems Oregon is bound to play one road game in the middle of the season with a tiny WR room. https://t.co/NCZu6ZKAnm

Tarmac
In positive news, Oregon playing on the road means they finally have an opportunity to tarmac Mehringer.

Situational Awareness Lacking
Two guys running the same route, throwing short of the sticks, players don’t know how many yards they need, screen passes to the weak side, junk trick plays.

Looks like my little brother’s first day on Madden. Instead it’s the Oregon Ducks.

I'm not sure I understand the theory behind running a WR sweep away from the side of the field where four of your offensive linemen are just standing watching the play.
Dante Moore
If Oregon loses, what are the odds that Dante Moore never plays another down for the Ducks?

No Confidence
You can count on one hand how many times Oregon has called a 3rd down pass play with routes beyond the sticks

Rock Bottom
The scary thing is that Oregon might not have hit bottom yet. The disastrous hiring of Drew Mehringer as OC and Lanning’s subsequent refusal to do something about it has the Ducks spiraling into the abyss this season. A complete waste of several superb recruiting classes. 🦆😢
