Dan Lanning did a lot during the Oregon Ducks' bye week, including extended game prep for the upcoming game against the UCLA Bruinsand local recruiting trips throughout the Pacific Northwest. Lanning also spent some time trying to learn a thing or two in the coaching world from a well-respected peer.
Video surfaced late last week of Lanning spending the afternoon with the Seattle Seahawksat one of their practices, talking shop with head coach Mike Macdonald and the defending Super Bowl Champions. Macdonald and Lanning have never crossed paths in the coaching world, but both have been open about their respect for each other over the past few years.
On Monday night, Lanning said that he was in the area for a recruiting trip and found the opportunity
to act as a fly on the wall.
"Yeah, Mike's always been a guy that I have a tremendous amount of respect for," Lanning said. "I was going to be in the area recruiting in Seattle anyway, so had the opportunity, you know, traveling up there to be able to see, 'Hey, can I be a fly on the wall for a little bit and see if there's anything that might fit us,' or just bounce some ideas off each other. I've always thought he does things the right way, and I got a chance to be there. I didn't want to be a distraction."
Whether it's getting a chance to watch how the Seahawks run certain drills or talk about schemes with a well-respected coaching staff, Lanning took the opportunity to try and get better during the offseason; something he asks of all his players as well.
Ultimately, Lanning did say that he left with a few nuggets that he could bring back to Eugene, though he wasn't planning to reveal what they were any time soon.
"We got a chance to be able to pick up a couple things that they do that might fit us," Lanning said. "I wouldn't necessarily share any of those things with y'all, but more than anything, just grateful that they gave me that opportunity to be there."
