Though the Oregon Ducks may feel like they drew the short end of the stick with having a Week 5 bye, there's a lot of information that can gleaned and improved upon from the first four games of the 2026 season. With blue-chip recruits and highly-touted transfers lining all levels of the defense, the Ducks have not been up to snuff thus far.
Overall, the entire defense has been leaky in several crucial situations, especially in Week's 1 and 2 versus Boise State and Oklahoma State. When a stop was needed, the Ducks simply couldn't get the opposition of the field and out of the end zone.
That changed a bit in Week 4 in a must-win bout with USC, as the Trojans struggled to move the ball early in the fourth quarter, allowing Oregon's offense to take
over and build a two-score lead that proved to be the difference. And still, the Ducks rank either mediocre or much lower than they need to be in a majority of defense statistics — especially when considering a game factored into these statistical rankings came against lowly FCS Portland State.
The week off should allow time on task to improve upon those shortcomings that could show up in greater effect against stout Big Ten opponents in the coming weeks and months.
But before we dive into the next eight weeks of football for the Ducks, let's take a look at where Oregon's defense and special teams rank nationally in various statistics.
