The bye week did not help the Oregon Ducks integrate a new starting quarterback into the offense, as the Ducks fell at home to UCLA and committed seven turnovers. Dylan Raiola was off from the start, coughing up the ball three times before being benched at the end of the third quarter.
The Ducks didn't run the ball well either, and the offense entered the fourth quarter with less than 100 total yards. Brock Thomas did help the Ducks compete in the fourth quarter and nearly tie the game. Still, offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer reduced the offense to its most fundamental form, reverting to the I-formation with the entire field still in front of them.
Needless to say, the Oregon offense's standing nationally plummeted. Dan Lanning didn't shut
down any talk about potentially changing play-callers, but the bigger issue lies at quarterback after Raiola turned into a pumpkin. Dante Moore's status remains unclear, so it could be Raiola or Thomas leading the Ducks this weekend when Nebraska comes to Autzen Stadium on Saturday night.
The defense gave the offense several short fields by forcing three turnovers and even setting up a touchdown from the 1-yard line in the first half, but the Ducks made their lives difficult by missing easy throws, going long stretches without moving the chains, and eventually folding the offense up and having no threat of an aerial attack.
It's a problem the Ducks will have to find an answer to this week to avoid another embarrassing showing this weekend.
