Sometimes, as a journalist, you leave a game and ask yourself, "Man, what am I going to write about after that one?"
Saturday in Los Angeles was not one of those nights.
On the contrary: Where do we even begin?
The Oregon Duckswent down to Los Angeles andbeat the USC Trojans, 41-27,in a game that largely defined how the rest of their season would play out. They did much of it without their starting quarterback and Heisman Trophy-contending leader, Dante Moore, after he was knocked out of the game with a head injury in the second quarter following a brutal and dirty hit from USC defender Desman Stephens. Moore was carted off the field and loaded into an ambulance, where the latest word is that he is recovering.
Meanwhile, the Ducks regrouped, came
together, and managed a season-defining win on the road over one of their bitterest rivals.
Putting it like that almost doesn't feel like doing it justice.
Let's try to dive deeper. Here are my five biggest takeaways from the game:
The Culture
A couple of weeks ago, following the Ducks' Week 2 loss to the Oklahoma State Cowboys,I wrote about the culture in Eugene, questioning if we were starting to see cracks in what Dan Lanning had built, or if the early season struggles were more of a refocusing for what could still be a magical season.
On Saturday night, it feels as if the culture is strong; dare I say, stronger than ever.
On the road, in a tense environment, against a higher-ranked team, in one of the biggest rivalry games on the schedule, Oregon got knocked down. They saw their leader, Dante Moore, literally knocked out of the game in the scariest moment I've seen play out in a live football game in person.
Moore's head hit the turf, his body tensed up in a fencing reaction that is commonly tied to a severe concussion, and his legs twitched. He stayed like that for several seconds, all while chaos took place around him. USC defender Desman Stephens celebrated the hit that Dan Lanning later called "dirty," and Duck players stood up for their QB, scuffling with Trojans until a near brawl broke out between the lines.
Eventually, everyone was separated, but then the minutes passed as everyone waited. Nearly 15 minutes went by before Moore was eventually loaded into an ambulance and taken to a nearby hospital. But as soon as the ambulance doors closed, play resumed.
The Ducks were asked to step up and keep playing football without their brother.
Talk about a time to dig deep.
"I just called the guys up, and first thing we did, we had a prayer," Lanning said after the game. "We prayed for you know his health, you know, prayed for some composure for ourselves, right, and wanted to make sure that we had to play the game in between the whistles the rest of the game."
The Ducks did that. They immediately scored a touchdown with Dylan Raiola stepping in and finding Evan Stewart a few plays later, and then came out of the half and scored on their first drive, going up two scores. From there, they were able to hold on relatively comfortably.
You have to wonder what type of turning point this is going to be in a season that started with such high expectations. Many thought that Oklahoma State was a wake-up call, and I believe that it was. On Saturday night, it felt as if this was the prove-it moment that was needed.
Oregon was handed an excuse, but they said, "No, thank you." With the season hanging in the balance, and a playoff spot technically on the line, that was as impressive a performance as we've ever seen from a Dan Lanning-coached team.
Dylan Raiola
Let me start by making something clear: When healthy, I believe that Dante Moore is the quarterback that Oregon needs to take them to their ceiling this season in Eugene. With that being said, I think Duck fans learned on Saturday night that they're in great hands if he is sidelined for an extended period of time.
Dylan Raiola was fantastic.
He didn't get to prep as a starter, and the game plan was not for him, but he stepped in during a crucial time for the Ducks and absolutely delivered. The final stat line reads like this: 19-for-25, 289 yards, 2 TDs. However, the performance seemed more impressive than that.
It was the poise that he played with and the command that he displayed while checking protections at the line or signaling for hot routes that eventually led to the go-ahead touchdown for Dakorien Moore. It was the ease with which he stepped up in the pocket, evaded pressure, and kept his eyes downfield.
It was the confidence that his teammates showed in him, and the fact that the offense didn't skip a beat when No. 8 replaced No. 5.
There's no telling how long Dante will be out. Fortunately, Oregon enters a bye week, and then welcomes the UCLA Bruins to town. Maybe Moore is back for that game, or maybe he returns the week after; we will hopefully learn more in the coming days. For the time being, though, with Raiola under center, it's clear that the Oregon offense is in good hands, and absolutely still feels like it's capable of making a run in the College Football Playoff.
The Defense Still Has Questions
I'm not going to sit here and pretend like, since Oregon won, there's nothing to harp on or correct. There are still absolutely questions that we have with this defense, and they showed up on Saturday night.
Now, to the defensive line's credit, they came out with their hair on fire and picked up two critical sacks on the first drive of the game. Throughout the contest, though, things slowed, and USC's Jayden Maiava was able to pick things apart in the secondary as he was allowed more time in the pocket.
When all was said and done, the Trojans put up 446 yards of offense, with 326 passing yards and 120 rushing yards. Of course, USC has a great offense, and Lincoln Riley is a great offensive coach, but this is a Ducks' defense that has been billed as a game-changer, and once again, we didn't see that for four quarters.
Things were improved on this side of the ball, undoubtedly. It was great to see A'Mauri Washington have the best game of his season so far, racking up five tackles with a couple of batted balls at the line, and a major presence in the rushing defense. But if this Oregon team is going to go as far as we imagined before the year started, and we're expecting this to last into January, the defense needs to improve.
Dierre Hill Breaks Out
It feels fitting that the player many people compare to Kenjon Barner had one of the best games of his career down here in The Memorial Coliseum. While sophomore Dierre Hill may not have put up Barner's stats from 2012 — 321 yards and 5 touchdowns — he had himself a nice little game with 65 rushing yards, 105 receiving yards (170 total yards) and two touchdowns.
They came in massive points of the game, too.
Coming out of halftime, with Oregon needing an early statement following the loss of Dante Moore, Hill hauled in a screen pass from Raiola and jetted upfield, gaining 62 yards and putting the ball just outside the goal line, later punching it in for six.
This builds on what we've seen from him so far this year: he's added tools to his game and become a more complete runner, able to work inside the numbers while also splitting into the passing game and making an impact.
It shouldn't come as any surprise that he could put on a performance like this, but it sure was encouraging to see it happen in a big moment.
What Happens Next?
It will be very interesting to see where Oregon goes from here. You could argue that this bye week could not have come at a better time, giving them a few days to soak in this win, regroup, get healthy, and prepare for the stretch run of the season. That time should allow Dante Moore to get closer to his potential return to the field, while also allowing Dylan Raiola to get more comfortable in the QB1 spot while he's sidelined.
You could also argue that the next opponent on the schedule — a red-hot UCLA Bruins team that has turned into the darling of the college football world — is also just what the doctor ordered; a team that you can easily get up for and prove that you still have the West Coast dominance over.
But the next game for the Ducks is going to be incredibly important. We left that Oklahoma State game thinking that it might be an anomaly, and that Oregon was really better than they showed against a decent team in a loss. Now we need to make sure the other side of that equation holds true. Let's make sure that Raiola is really as good as he showed vs. USC, and that the Ducks really have turned a corner going forward, capable of making a deep run toward the Big Ten Championship and the postseason.
"It ain't over yet," Lanning said after the game. "Tonight was one game. We've got to go stack another game. You guys are going to write whatever you want to; we don't care. You don't get to hop back on the bus."
The bus is rolling in Eugene. Time to see how far it can go.
A "Parting Shot"
This is a "5 takeaways" column, but I have to add this one in at the very end.
Call it a "parting shot," which is something that Dan Lanning gave to Lincoln Riley at the end of his press conference on Saturday night. Two of them, in fact.
"I've watched three of their TV games," Lanning said of the Trojans. "I haven't seen a game packed yet. But we were here, and it was packed tonight. So I guess when the Ducks show up, that's how you fill up the Coliseum."
A nice little jab to open the press conference after giving Riley one of his more frustrating defeats at USC. It didn't end there, though.
After all of the questions were asked and Lanning was walking off the podium, he decided to sneak a haymaker in, targeting all of the recruits who had eyes on this game.
"3-0 against these guys," Lanning said. "I guess if you're a good football player in the area, you should come to Oregon. Or you can stay in LA and go to a Chris Brown concert."
Mmm. Chef's kiss.
This rivalry means something, and for the third time, Dan Lanning got the last laugh. And then, the social media team at Oregon got in on the fun.

That's a post-game victory that Lanning is going to savor for a while.
