Before the season began, the Oregon Ducks football program enjoyed the highest preseason ranking in its history. Oregon was ranked No. 2 to start out the year.
That's not the case anymore.
In the latest edition of the US LBM Coaches poll, the Ducks fell to No. 6 after their close 34-27 win over Boise State. Oregon was expected to dominate the Broncos, but they proved to be a tougher challenge as Oregon needed a late fourth-quarter touchdown to win the game.
Coming in at No. 1 is, to no one's surprise, Ohio State, after their big 56-3 win over Ball State. Georgia moved up a spot to No. 2, and Texas comes in at No. 3. Notre Dame and Indiana round out the Top 5 before the Ducks make an appearance.
It's only Week 1 of the season, and while a drop of four
spots might be a little jarring, there's no reason for concern for Oregon fans. The Ducks have plenty of chances to move their way back up the poll, especially with Ohio State playing Texas this week. One of those teams will lose and move down some.
USC is the next Big Ten team to show itself in the poll after Oregon at No. 14. The Trojans looked impressive with their shutout win over Fresno State.
Penn State comes in at No. 16, and Washington, despite struggling with WSU for much of the day, stayed put at No. 19 in the poll. Iowa moved up a spot to No. 21, but the biggest drop of the week is Michigan, who fell eight spots to No. 24 with its controversial win over Western Michigan.
