Snap.
Dylan Raiola tugged out the green silicone wristband on his right arm. The Oregon Ducks' quarterback adorns plenty of colors and bands on his right wrist, but the "Oregon Ohana" band carries a special meaning.
Every time Raiola plucks at the band and lets it slap down onto his skin, it's a reminder; a reality check. Oregon strength coach Wilson Love suggested using the band as a mental reset for the former five-star. When things go wrong, let the band snap and move forward.
That's not all Raiola needed to do to rebound from the worst start of his career against UCLA, which saw him benched after three quarters of play. That was the low point on what has already been a rollercoaster first season in Eugene for the Nebraska transfer.
Once a quarterback
is benched, it's rare to see a team turn back to them so quickly, but Raiola is in a unique situation. Dan Lanning recognized the hardship his transfer quarterback has faced in quick succession this season, but it has been a season of growth for Oregon's coach and newest passer that neither has backed down from.
"I think everybody will have self-doubts or thoughts in that moment about how things need to be," Lanning said. "A lot of people don't necessarily get second chances. He got a second chance to go out there tonight and execute for us when he was ready. I'm proud that he was able to do that."
Expectations were tempered, but rising after Raiola debuted with a perfect 11-for-11 outing against Portland State, only to win over the hearts of Ducks fans when he came in off the bench to rally the team against USC when Dante Moore went down with a serious head injury. Then, three turnovers against the Bruins had those same fans rooting for change at Autzen Stadium.
"UCLA was very uncharacteristic, I’ll say," Raiola said after the game. "I rarely talk about myself, but I will say that’s very uncharacteristic of me to play like that. I felt horrible. I let these guys down. These guys put so much time in. These guys have futures in the league and they decided to come back, and to have a performance like that? You've gotta take it on the chin; you've gotta grow. And it was all about growth.”
Brock Thomas earned the start against Nebraska in practice, but it didn't take long until fans were clamoring for Raiola's return to the field. In the fourth quarter, Lanning once again changed quarterbacks, and Raiola's newfound confidence was immediately apparent.
"I love Nebraska... but it was about Oregon tonight." 🗣️

“I thought he did an incredible job,” Lanning said. “I think he soaked it in for a little bit. You guys probably recognized it, right? He’s pretty good on the stage.”
Facing a third down on his first series, Raiola called his own number, scrambling for the first down before quickly getting up and signalling for added measure, inflating the Autzen crowd even more.
Snap.
The wristband pounced off his skin again. It wasn't quick, but Raiola led a 17-play drive that took nearly eight minutes off the clock to get a field goal, bringing the Ducks within a score. The emotions of facing his former team, in crunch time nonetheless, were evident, but Raiola didn't let the moment shake him.
Lanning saw shades of the same Raiola who rallied the Oregon sideline in Los Angeles, playing confidently from the pocket while juicing the offense with an extra dose of swagger and poise.
"He was ready for his moment," Lanning said. "I think there was juice and a spark that was created, but I think our guys were pretty laser-focused consistently on doing their job. Dylan created some success. It didn't always look like how we had drawn it up, but he gave us a chance. I felt like he moved in the pocket similarly to how he did in the USC game and didn't put the ball in jeopardy, which gave us a great opportunity."
Raiola has been no stranger to criticism throughout his career. From failing to reach his five-star potential at Nebraska, to critiques about his personality and physical appearance, to a sudden transfer that left Cornhuskers fans feeling cheated, Raiola has remained focused on improving himself and elevating the play of those around him in Eugene.
Although unintentional, Raiola borrowed a motto often used by recently retired Oregon men's basketball coach Dana Altman. Sometimes you, sometimes me, always us.
"This game was never about them," Raiola said of Nebraska. "It was always about Oregon. It was always about us and us getting back on track and playing our brand of football."

On the final drive, Raiola called Drew Mehringer's playcalling "elite" as the Ducks ran 20 plays and drove 82 yards in just over five minutes for the offense's lone touchdown of the night. Facing the pressure, Raiola climbed the pocket and delivered a strike to Jamari Johnson in the back of the end zone, breaking the back of his former team and delivering when he needed to the most.
"Everyone was very communicative on what we wanted to accomplish," Raiola said. "Everyone was dialed in. With 28 seconds, we still came to the sideline and were like, 'For some reason, if we go to overtime, here's our plan.' We just kept preparing until JJ had a little cute toe drag touchdown to win the game."
Sitting next to Johnson and Dakorien Moore, Raiola had two of his biggest supporters beside him. A disastrous outing could have folded Raiola and shut down any confidence the Ducks had in him moving forward. But leaders like Moore reached out to have his back, and it translated to production on the field in crunch time.
Through the ups and downs of his first season with the Ducks, Raiola's mentality hasn't changed. The criticism hasn't gone away — Raiola mentioned he received death threats after his performance against UCLA — but a win against his former team in heroic fashion should silence some doubters, at least for now.

Raiola won't be afforded the opportunity to get too high from the win, nor too low from not earning the start. Lanning noted that Thomas and Raiola will continue to compete in practice before the Ducks hit the road to face Illinois. Back to square one, all Raiola can do is try to win the job again.
Snap. The wristband resets again.
"It's all about my family. It's all about these guys in this locker room." Raiola said. "I just want to win football games. Whatever that takes, I owe it to these guys. I owe it to our fans, and we're gonna keep doing whatever it takes to win because I love these dudes, and nothing else matters to me than them."
