It was bound to happen at some point, but the Herbert brothers are finally back together. After being waived during the NFL roster cutdown on Sunday, former Oregon Ducks tight end Patrick Herbert signed with the Los Angeles Chargers' practice squad on Monday, per NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.
The younger Herbert won't be on the active roster, but he will be in the same organization as his brother and former Oregon teammate, Justin Herbert. The brothers are Eugene royalty, having gone from Sheldon High School to shining at Autzen Stadium on Saturdays.
The Herbert brothers only played one season together at Oregon. Justin Herbert led the Ducks to a Pac-12 title and a Rose Bowl victory as a senior in the 2019-20 season, while Patrick Herbert appeared
in one game and took a redshirt. While the quarterback went on to become a first-round pick and star for the Chargers, the pass-catching Herbert spent five more seasons in Eugene. He earned a role in his final three seasons with the team and caught four touchdowns during his time with the Ducks.

Herbert fielded offers from multiple teams but heads to LA having done extensive research on the starting QB.

Herbert went undrafted and signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2025. He was elevated to the active roster at the end of last season, but has yet to make a catch in an NFL game. In the preseason, Herbert has seen work on special teams and made a pair of catches for 12 yards in the Jaguars' final preseason game before he was waived.
According to Garagfolo, Herbert had multiple offers across the league, but ultimately chose to sign with the Chargers to join his brother in Los Angeles.
The Chargers have a pair of veteran tight ends on the active roster in Charlie Kolar and David Njoku, as well as Oronde Gadsden entering his second season. There isn't a spot on the roster for the younger Herbert brother right now, but his familiarity with the team's quarterback could be helpful if he is pushed into action.
